For more than two decades Denmark’s knighted and
renowned bassist Chris Minh Doky has been recognized
as an original master of the upright bass. Technical
brilliance delivered with personal passion prompted
DownBeat magazine to write: " ...
there is a softness and crisp clarity that is very
different from the sound others derive from the
acoustic instrument”
JazzTimes
augmented with "A powerful bassist...superb
technique” and the New York Times speaks of the
bassist having “..a commanding presence”.
The Guardian “…few bassists combine
softness and supple strength so distinctively, or
mix dense, swirling runs and the simplicity of an
underlying theme is such a shapely and unforced
manner.”
Chris Minh Doky & The Nomads
deliver tradition-defying electric jazz that is
wired for funk. The band includes Dean Brown/guitar,
who with his unique sound and stage performance with
the likes of Marcus Miller, Boz Scaggs and the
Brecker Brothers has distinguished himself as one of
the most funky guitarists today, George Whitty on
keyboards shows why he is a Grammy winnng producer
and musician with albums such as the many and
amazing Michael Brecker releases, and the phenomenal
award winning internationally known drummer, Dave
Weckl, completes this all star band. As a group they
continually tour the world and with a live album
that topped several international jazz charts, they
have become a very popular live band.
Doky's
rare ability consistently places him in the top-5
lists of reader polls around the world, and he was
and is not only a leader but a sideman with artists
such as Michael Brecker, Mike Stern, David Sanborn,
Trilok Gurtu, Bireli Lagrene, John Scofield and
Kenny Garret among others. A knight of jazz became
the latest honor for Danish-Vietnamese Doky after
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark in 2010 made him a
knight of the Order of the Dannebrog for his
contributions to the arts. Two years earlier the
international Ben Webster Foundation gave Doky its
eponymous award for his jazz accomplishments through
the years. As a producer Doky was Grammy nominated
in 2012 for his work with Randy Brecker.
Doky
spreads the word of jazz in places other than on
stage and in recordings. He hosts regular jazz
programs on TV and radio. From 2008-2012 Doky was
the artistic director of the DR Big Band. His
creative input acted as the spark plug that ignited
renewed interest in the BIG band and recruited new
listeners. With Doky’s unique sound, crossing genres
comes naturally. Since 2013 he has also collaborated
with Twyla Tharp and the Royal Danish Ballet with
'Come Fly Away’ which enjoyed weeks of sold out
shows. ‘Royal Copenhagen’ has recognized Doky’s
cultural impact by making him the face of their
prestigious brand. Yamaha and MarkBass have similar
regard.
Doky, Weckl, Brown and Whitty
together create an all star jazz band wired for
funk. Chris Minh Doky's uncanny style of pulling
funky sounds out of an upright bass leads The Nomads
on their odyssey.
